BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Colorado quarterback Julian “JuJu” Lewis became the first Colorado quarterback to throw four touchdown passes in an opening half Saturday against Weber State.

His big afternoon ties the school mark for any half held by John Hessler and Cody Hawkins (twice). Those were all in the second half.

Lewis, who turns 19 later this month, finished the half 15 of 18 for 331 yards. He also ran in a late score as the Buffaloes grabbed a 42-14 lead over the FCS Wildcats at the break.

His first play of the game was a 66-yard touchdown strike to DeAndre Moore Jr., leading to a school-best 212 yards in the first quarter. It surpassed the mark Joel Klatt set in the opening quarter (211) against Texas A&M on Oct. 8, 2005.

Lewis also had TD tosses of 63 and 48 yards in finishing the first quarter 7 of 8.

The only blemish for the second-year player on Saturday was losing the ball after being sacked by the Wildcats. It set up a Weber State touchdown. Lewis has yet to throw an interception since taking over late last season.

Lewis and the Buffaloes are learning the “Go-Go” offense implemented by new coordinator Brennan Marion. The innovative system features unbalanced formations and relies on Lewis' quick decision-making on run-pass option plays.

Hessler threw four touchdown passes at Oklahoma State on Nov. 4, 1995. Hawkins’ accomplished the feat twice, once against Iowa State on Nov. 8, 2008, and again at Toledo on Sept. 11, 2009.
